Pre-Summit Energy Action Days on 22-23 September to Showcase the Power of SDG7 and Catalytic Finance
To give more space to global leaders from across sectors to announce Energy Compact commitments, expand partnerships and build support, pre-summit virtual <a href="https://www.un.org/sites/un2.un.org/files/website_hld_program_for_22_23._v._9_sep_clean31_0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Energy Action Days</a> are being organized. On 22 September, an event will showcase&nbsp; &ldquo;The Power of SDG7 to Create a Better Future for People and Planet&rdquo;, and on 23 September, the theme will be &ldquo;Let&rsquo;s Get It Done: Catalytic Finance for Universal Energy Access and Energy Transition&rdquo;. <a href="https://www.un.org/sites/un2.un.org/files/website_hld_program_for_22_23._v._9_sep_clean31_0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Both events will take place 7:00-9:30 a.m. New York time.&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>

Leaders are being invited from national and city governments, business, foundations, youth networks and other civil society organizations, for an exciting programme of keynote remarks, interactive discussions and feature interviews. The programme will be posted shortly on the <a href="https://www.un.org/en/conferences/energy2021" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dialogue website</a>, along with details on how to watch and join the conversation.

ABOUT THE EVENT
The Center for Global Development (CGD) and Women in Global Health (WGH) are pleased to co-host this event, following the second session of the Generation Equality Forum, organized by UN Women in collaboration with France as country host. The Forum process, which ran over the past two years in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, was designed to catalyze momentum on global gender equality through new and robust commitments from governments, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society.
During the event, experts will reflect on the Forum&rsquo;s outcomes, with an emphasis on those from the Economic Justice and Rights Action Coalition. High-level representatives from the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, the OECD, country governments, and civil society will explore needed next steps to maintain momentum, ensure that stated commitments get implemented, and bolster longer-term accountability around women&rsquo;s economic empowerment and broader gender equality.

About this event:&nbsp;
This year&rsquo;s annual PMNCH Accountability Breakfast focuses on achieving greater equity for women, children and adolescents in Africa.
More than two-thirds of the world&rsquo;s maternal deaths occur in the Sub-Saharan region, as well as more than half of child deaths globally. Almost one in five women in Sub-Saharan Africa face unmet needs for family planning. Now in the COVID-19 era, injustices have been further accentuated. Less than 3% of adults in Africa are fully vaccinated, and 75% of the world&rsquo;s vaccination supply is held by only 10 countries &ndash; none in Africa.
The 2021 PMNCH Accountability Breakfast will focus on innovative solutions to addressing injustices and improving well-being in Sub-Saharan Africa, including through new country-led financing, policy and service delivery commitments. These include digital solutions for improved accountability and action, as well as youth-led action to demand universal health coverage and greater citizen participation in line with the seven asks of the PMNCH Call to Action on COVID-19 and the Call to Action on Adolescent Well-Being.

The COVID-19 crisis is reversing years of hard-won gains for women, children, and adolescent health and human capital outcomes. More than one year on, with disrupted health systems stretched to the breaking point and economies severely impacted, women, children and adolescents in the world&rsquo;s poorest countries have been hardest hit by a secondary crisis that threatens to roll back the remarkable gains made over the last decade.
The world was making steady yet uneven progress in improving health outcomes for women, children and adolescents. Amid better access to family planning, skilled birth attendants, and better nutrition, the newborn mortality rate almost halved worldwide between 1990 and 2018.
Now, the pandemic is reversing hard-won gains on the Sustainable Development Goal of achieving health and well-being for all by 2030. In many low- and middle-income countries, coverage of essential health services for women and children has dropped by up to 25% during the pandemic. Reports have flagged rises in stillbirths and maternal deaths, while contraceptive use has been disrupted for an estimated 12 million women in 115 countries. Women and girls have also borne the brunt of other secondary impacts of the pandemic: dramatic increases in gender-based violence, protracted school closures, job losses, and increases in unpaid care.
These trends threaten to cause a lasting secondary crisis if COVID-19 efforts are not complemented by investments in and integration of essential health services for women, children and adolescents as part of the response and recovery.
This event, hosted by Devex in partnership with the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents (GFF), will explore how and why countries and partners must maintain a laser focus on protecting and promoting the continuation of essential health services for the most vulnerable populations and strengthening frontline community and primary care services and systems to help countries prepare for the equitable, affordable and safe delivery of vaccines and tools - while also strengthening health systems and building resilience for future pandemics.

Decarbonizing the world energy system by mid-century to meet the 1.5&deg; limit encouraged by the Paris Agreement requires comprehensive measures by all signatories to the Agreement.&nbsp; COP26 represents a decisive opportunity to place nations on the path to decarbonization by 2050, as they continue to raise their ambitions in their Nationally Determined Contributions and long-term strategies under the Paris Agreement. Engineers are key actors within this process, as they have the technical knowledge, skills, and expertise to plan and implement an inclusive and sustainable pathway to decarbonization.
The Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET) will be chaired by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and will engage important partners from the United Nations (UN), academia and business sectors. SDSN, in conjunction with UNIDO and several other UN agencies, will constitute a Steering Committee to oversee a global, high-level body of engineers and energy systems experts to contribute to the UN Secretary General&rsquo;s Coalition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and provide engineering pathways to achieve comprehensive decarbonization by mid-century. The work of the CEET will be undertaken by recognized global experts operating in their personal capacities and responding to requests for information and guidance by the UN.

Building COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence through Social Media Behavior Change Campaigns

<span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;" data-sheets-value="{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;The United Nations (UN) Secretary General has urged all nations to declare a state of climate emergency, and has also called the recent Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ⎯ which reports the worsening unprecedented, unequivocal and irreversible (for centuries to millennia) effects caused by human-induced global heating ⎯ a &ldquo;Code Red for Humanity.&rdquo;\n\nAgainst the backdrop of the multi-faceted global pandemic recovery, among other global challenges, the gravity and urgency of the planetary climate emergency is becoming more widely understood, and increasingly acknowledged. Science is showing that the civilization-nurturing climatic conditions of our planet &ndash; stable for the past approximately 12,000 years &ndash; are profoundly threatened, and serious changes are happening more quickly than predicted. For example, a range of the earth&rsquo;s known biophysical systems which regulate the global climate are showing signs of instability earlier than scientists had predicted and may foreshadow the crossing of dangerous and mutually reinforcing tipping points. Such developments telegraph the seriousness of current conditions and the need for rapid action by national governments and the international community to stabilize and protect the earth&rsquo;s climate system. \n\nUnless we rapidly and radically shift course, the world is heading for catastrophic climate change and possible ecological collapse. Some have called our present predicament a survival crisis for humanity &ndash; and certainly for human civilization and for populations as we currently know them &ndash; depending on the course of action we collectively choose. Paradoxically, even though solutions exist to mitigate the most devastating effects of the climate crisis &ndash; including global governance solutions &ndash; they are not being implemented at a pace and scale commensurate with the magnitude and the urgency of the challenge. \n\nEven with this sharpening scientific understanding, the vast majority of the world&rsquo;s emitters are not yet on track to meet their pledges of emission cuts. It has been observed that the timelines of many nations are not ambitious enough (e.g., focusing on mid-Century targets), and current global governance approaches remain weak, lacking in accountability mechanisms, fragmented and siloed. What new approaches and governance innovations might the international community wish to consider, as a matter of priority? Science is showing that the civilization-nurturing climatic conditions of our planet &ndash; stable for the past approximately 12,000 years &ndash; are profoundly threatened, and serious changes are happening more quickly than predicted. For example, a range of the earth&rsquo;s known biophysical systems which regulate the global climate are showing signs of instability earlier than scientists had predicted and may foreshadow the crossing of dangerous and mutually reinforcing tipping points. Such developments telegraph the seriousness of current conditions and the need for rapid action by national governments and the international community to stabilize and protect the earth&rsquo;s climate system. Unless we rapidly and radically shift course, the world is heading for catastrophic climate change and possible ecological collapse. Some have called our present predicament a survival crisis for humanity &ndash; and certainly for human civilization and for populations as we currently know them &ndash; depending on the course of action we collectively choose. Paradoxically, even though solutions exist to mitigate the most devastating effects of the climate crisis &ndash; including global governance solutions &ndash; they are not being implemented at a pace and scale commensurate with the magnitude and the urgency of the challenge. Even with this sharpening scientific understanding, the vast majority of the world&rsquo;s emitters are not yet on track to meet their pledges of emission cuts. It has been observed that the timelines of many nations are not ambitious enough (e.g., focusing on mid-Century targets), and current global governance approaches remain weak, lacking in accountability mechanisms, fragmented and siloed. What new approaches and governance innovations might the international community wish to consider, as a matter of priority? From UNGA to COP26 & Beyond: The Future of Climate Governance

Objectives
This presentation will provide examples of input/output/impact as it relates to community-based creative and artistic practises and their significance to the agenda of the UN Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development (2021).
Examples of project partnerships undertaken in Canada as well as Central/South America and Africa will demonstrate numerous aspects of engagement. Future applications of the methodology will be explored within the context of project work in S.E. Asia and a proposal for United Nations activities that engage the knowledge and skills of Artists and Cultural Leads.

Agenda
The presentation and discussion will highlight innovative arts-based programming that is designed to engage communities. The focus is on the development of tools which foster communication, responsibility, and action.
Project activities are based in an inter-sectorial approach, which encourages increasing collaboration and engagement in the focus areas: leadership, health, gender, climate action, and the arts.
The projects have four components:
<ol>
<li>participatory program planning and evaluation which engages community stakeholders,</li>
<li>organizational capacity building and skill development,</li>
<li>community-based awareness programming that incorporates popular education and participatory theatre techniques -- 12-foot (3.6 metre) puppet construction, presentations by community leaders/elders, collective story creation, song writing/drumming, performance, etc.</li>
<li>production of communication tools for large scale dissemination - video, radio, television broadcast, and social media.</li>
</ol>
Through the collaborative development of story lines, we can look into environmental, social, political, economic, and gender issues. The intention is to foster awareness and action - locally and globally. Also, we work to develop a collective voice and interact with leaders and public officials at the level of policy and funding - from ideation to implementation. This is accomplished through projects with community members - from young people to elders, non-governmental organizations, government bodies, universities / colleges / schools, faith-based groups, media, business, cultural leaders, and creative professionals.
"Puppets give puppeteers permission to explore deeply, yet feel emotional safety as a result of having the distance of being in character. Situations that are part of the social fabric, but are often without voice, are brought into the open through both the comic antics and the serious tones that these giants embody. The fact that giant puppets are visually stunning, employ art forms from music to myth, break the barrier of the printed word, can be presented in local languages, and engage emotion as well as reason ensure they provide a powerful spectacle.
