VIDEO MESSAGES by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
Food safety saves lives. It is not only a critical enabler to achieving food security but also plays a vital role in reducing foodborne disease. For the third observance of World Food Safety Day, FAO is leading the activities that will focus on these issues, delving into the theme of safe food now for a healthy tomorrow. 1.The opening half of the online gathering will be about the science behind the assessments, practices, standards and policies that are keeping food safe throughout the supply chain. It will position FAO, WHO and Codex as authorities on food safety – highlighting the science-based policy support, technical guidance and capacity development activities and that are making a difference in Member countries. The audience will have an opportunity to interact with the two main speakers in a Q&A session. 2.The second half of the event will be a chance to hear some success stories from around the world. The perspectives of different stakeholders – public sector officials, farmers, food business operators, scientists, health professionals, consumer representatives and students – will be shared, some of which may be pre-recorded. These stories will bring to the fore aspects of food production and consumption that are often taken for granted, prompting audiences to appreciate the efforts of others as well as learn and do more to keep food safe themselves.
Objectives:
Inspire and highlight actions to be taken to ensure ‘safe food now’ and raise awareness of how this will build a healthy tomorrow.
Show the ways that FAO and WHO are working with governments and the food and health sectors to enhance food safety.
Encourage everyone to learn more about food safety.
Celebrate the Day with stakeholders.
