The health care related economic burden due to female genital mutilation (FGM) is estimated to be US$1.4 billion per year. This number will continue to rise unless efforts are accelerated to prevent the harmful practice, to reduce the harm to women and girls, and to minimise the health burden and associated health care costs to already strained health systems.
