Awareness Days
Health
On December 12, like every year, is the day we celebrate Universal Health Day globally (also called Universal Health Coverage Day). This day has great relevance throughout the world and particularly in the Region of the Americas, because it represents a new opportunity to remember that Universal Health means that all people, everywhere, have access to quality health services, when and where they need it, without exposing them to financial hardship and with interventions that allow them to have a healthy life for their development and human well-being.
The COVID-19 pandemic has once again highlighted the linkages between health, the economy, the environment, and social protection policies and mechanisms. Unfortunately, as countries continue to tackle the pandemic and look towards recovery, public health gains reported over the past 10 years continue to be lost. Therefore, it is urgent to invest in building resilient health systems as a central component of recovery and thus resume the path towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health in the Americas.
With this approach and under the motto “Leave No One´s Health Behind: Invest in Health Systems for All", we will celebrate Universal Health Day with a high-level virtual meeting led by the Director of PAHO, Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, who together with experts and leaders from the Americas region will analyze how countries can sustain and increase public investment in health and social protection to build resilience in health systems.
We invite you to join this event on December 10, 2021, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (EST)
