With more than three billion doses of coronavirus vaccines administered, in over 190 countries worldwide, there’s a strong sense and hope the tide of Covid-19 is beginning to ebb. Yet a legacy will remain on all our shores: the very real and debilitating condition of Long Covid. It’s thought that one in every 10 people hit by the virus, whether mild or severe, will develop Long Covid. The impact of COVID on the body are wide ranging, attacking our respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Long Covid causes an equally wide range of long-term symptoms including fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle pains, chest pain, brain fog, headache and psychological disorders like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. For many people with Long Covid the simplest, most basic aspects of everyday life – like dressing and bathing, for example – leave them exhausted. For these people, getting back to work will be a challenge on a wholly different scale. In the second of our three-part webinar series, ‘Building health and safety practice for a new world’, we’ll address the wide-ranging challenges brought by Long Covid. The syndrome maybe new and the scientists still have much to do to help find a way forward for its medical management but Long Covid is undoubtedly here. OSH professionals will be on the frontline to help build the right conditions for their return to work and their journey back to full health. The panel, hosted by Lawrence Webb, IOSH Vice-President will including Dr Karen Michell, Researcher at IOSH and Professor Anne Harriss, Immediate Past President, Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM).
