More than half the world’s population are at risk of infection from vector-borne diseases.
Vectors also transmit many neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) mostly among the poorest populations who have limited or no access to adequate housing, safe drinking-water and sanitation.
The world has seen a substantial increase in the emergence and re-emergence of vector-borne diseases. This is largely attributed to many factors that include environmental changes, increased international travel and trade, changes in agricultural practices and rapid, unplanned urbanization. Addressing the burden of diseases transmitted by these vectors is critical.
In 2017, WHO published the Global vector control response: an integrated approach for the control of vector-borne diseases (GVCR) that focuses on reducing the burden and threat of vector-borne diseases that affect humans through effective, locally adapted and sustainable interventions. The Response (GVCR) is also a crucial cross-cutting pillar of the NTD road map for 2021-2030 and advocate for integrated activities to be implemented based on country experiences.
This webinar will consider specific GVCR approaches and panellists will discuss progress in implementation of GVCR. They will also share operational experiences in vector surveillance and control as well as highlight the importance of integrated and multisectoral actions through practical examples and facilitated discussion.
