UNESCO, as the United Nations Agency with a mandate for science is leading the development of an international standard-setting instrument on Open Science in the form of a UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science.

To advance the Open Science discussion in the global context, UNESCO is taking account of different stakeholder perspectives. In an effort to build a broad open-ended and geographically balanced perspective on Open Science, thematic consultations with specific groups of stakeholders are being organised, and this online consultation for indigenous peoples is part of that.

Considering the great importance given to the creation of a productive relationship between Open Science and Indigenous Knowledge Systems, this consultation will provide a platform for indigenous peoples to provide their views on opportunities, challenges, needs and ways forward for indigenous and local knowledge and Open Science. These comments and recommendations will shape the draft UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science taking into consideration needs and aspirations of local and indigenous knowledge.

This meeting will be held in English and Spanish on Zoom platform.
