Launch the report on Health of the Afrodescendant Population in Latin America. The event will take place on 3 December, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., (Washington, D.C. time), on the online Zoom meeting platform.

The report describes the inequalities observed in the different health indicators among Afrodescendant populations, including factors such as ethnic discrimination, geographical location, and socioeconomic status, incorporating income level, occupation, and educational level. More than 80 percent of the countries examined exhibited inequalities that reflect disadvantages for Afrodescendant populations. These involve poverty levels, access to employment and income, as well as maternal and infant mortality, and access to complete vaccination coverage.

This publication underscores the firm determination of the Pan American Health Organization to increase knowledge about ethnic inequities in health, in line with the commitments made by the Member States with the adoption of the Policy on Ethnicity and Health (2017) and the Strategy and Plan of Action on Ethnicity and Health (2019-2025). This effort is also contextualized within the framework of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).

The objectives:

A.   Present and socialize the report on Health of the Afrodescendant Population in Latin America;

B.   Discuss possible strategies to improve the health of the Afrodescendant population in Latin America in the context of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).
