Future Foreign Policy series featuring Rep. Joaquin Castro

Please join the New American Engagement Initiative on Monday, October 18, at 3:30 p.m. EDT for a virtual discussion featuring Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-20) about his proposal to improve the United States’ ability to understand the rest of the world. Rep. Castro has introduced legislation to create an Open Translation and Analysis Center (OTAC), which would be charged with translating into English important open foreign-language material from the People’s Republic of China, Russia, and other countries of strategic interest, and publishing it for public consumption.

Strategists have tended to frame the pivot to great power competition in US foreign policy largely in military terms. But there are core diplomatic and cultural components to competition, including with a rising China. From improving knowledge and understanding of Chinese goals and motivations, to building a diplomatic service that can better handle America’s 21st century needs, this Future Foreign Policy event explores how the United States can best adapt its approach to meet those challenges.

The Future Foreign Policy series features new perspectives to expand the US toolkit to address traditional threats, confront emerging challenges, and enable greater and more robust global engagement with allies and partners. To this end, our invitees bring much-needed diversity into the national security dialogue. The speakers include not only those from traditionally underrepresented groups in Washington foreign policy circles, but also those who represent a range of viewpoints.
