On 30 June 2021, Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) organized a virtual launch of the report “Crying Out for Justice: Wage Theft Against Migrant Workers During COVID-19 VOLUME 2” which looked at the possible ways forward. The first part of the report gave examples on how technology was being used in dispute settlements since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic which could also be utilized to allow migrant workers to access justice. The discussion also focused on what concrete steps civil society and international organizations can do to address the issue of wage theft at this moment, given that thousands of migrant workers have returned since the start of the pandemic and the governments still have not implemented measures to carry out justice. The report was the first of a series of report launches and activities around the month-long 1st anniversary since the launch of Justice for Wage Theft (JFWT) campaign.

As part of the series and as the culminating program, MFA and the Lawyers Beyond Borders (LBB) Network are co-organizing a webinar titled “Alternatives to Dispute Settlements: Use of Technology in Accessing Justice for Migrant Workers” on 29 July 2021 (Thursday) from 8:00PM – 9:30PM Manila / 1:00PM – 2:30PM London.

Objectives:

  • To have an exchange on existing models of dispute settlement mechanisms that utilizes digital technology aside from the ADGM; and
  • To assess the feasibility of these mechanisms in addressing the issue of wage theft at present and post-COVID.
