Virt Africa

Terrorism, piracy, civil conflict, and strategic competition. Sub-Saharan Africa is home to a host of security challenges presenting critical implications for U.S. engagement. Join the CSIS Africa Program and representatives from U.S. Congress, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the U.S. Agency for International Development to discuss how Washington should approach these urgent issues.

This event opens with remarks from Congressman Anthony Brown (D-MD), Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs Chidi Blyden, and USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator for Africa Travis Adkins on the role their respective government branches can play in supporting peace and security processes in sub-Saharan Africa. Following opening remarks, CSIS Africa Program Director Judd Devermont will moderate a conversation between the three panelists on sub-Saharan Africa’s current security challenges, including how Washington should balance the use of military force and personnel deployments with diplomatic and development activities.
