The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the weaknesses and inequalities in health systems that affect the most vulnerable. As countries strive to build back better and achieve UHC by 2030, it is important to prioritize community-based primary health care systems to deliver essential services including reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health.
UHC will not be achieved without a significant change in how health care is delivered. The current facility-based system cannot be expanded sufficiently to achieve health for all. However, the use of digital technology in health care delivery has the potential to provide a needed breakthrough in achieving access to high-quality care for everyone, no matter where they live. Digitization and innovations have been made possible through government partnerships with other non-state actors. Leveraging these partnerships to strengthen national health information and surveillance systems, and empower communities to effectively prevent, detect and respond to epidemics and other health emergencies has great potential for improving public health globally.
This high-level roundtable discussion aims to challenge global health players including governments, donors, health practitioners, and advocates to sustain a sharp focus on strengthening community-based primary health care systems. Speakers include (more to be announced):
H.E Dr. Jane Aceng, Minister of Health, Uganda
